'Mad Cowboy to Speak Nov. 8 at Convention Center

YAKIMA -- Howard Lyman, the so-called "Mad Cowboy," will speak Nov. 8 at the Yakima Convention Center at 3 p.m. Lyman, 70, now of Ellensburg, is a fourth-generation Montana rancher who became a vocal critic of corporate agriculture. Making his case on the Oprah Winfrey show in 1996 landed him in court with the talk show queen, who famously said she'd never eat another hamburger. Ranchers accused them of libel but Lyman and Winfrey prevailed before a jury.

Camp Prime Time Fundraising Event Nov. 21

YAKIMA -- An auction, dinner and comedy will be featured at Camp Prime Time's eighth annual Christmas in November event Nov. 21. The fundraiser will begin at 5 p.m. at the Yakima Convention Center, 10 N. Eighth St. The cost is $50 per person.

County Inmate Who Walked Off Is Recaptured [Derived Headline]

YAKIMA, Wash. -- Authorities on Thursday recaptured the inmate who walked away from the Yakima County jail grounds earlier this month. Stephen Paul Boren, 25, was discovered at noon hiding in the kitchen of a residence for people recovering for substance abuse in the 900 block of East Arlington Avenue, according to a news release from the jail.

Fire District Files Suit Over Road Use [Derived Headline]

ELLENSBURG, Wash. -- A Kittitas County fire district has sued the Forest Service over a three-year-old dispute about whether firefighters should be able to plow a road reserved for snowmobilers in the winter. The road reaches a Fire District 8 station that is used to provide emergency service on Interstate 90. The fire district serves a 13-mile stretch of I-90, east of Snoqualmie Pass.

Mechanical Fire Damages Manufacturing Facility

YAKIMA -- A mechanical malfunction caused a small fire Wedensday night at a manufacturing facility in the 900 block of North First Avenue, firefighters said. Crews determined that the fire, reported shortly after 10 p.m., was contained to paper products in a dryer at Michelsen Packaging, officials said.

Twice-Convicted Sex Offender Changes Address [Derived Headline]

YAKIMA -- A registered sex offender has changed his listed address with the Yakima County Sheriff's Office to the 1100 block of South 21st Avenue in Yakima. Tyler J. Garbe, 24, was convicted of communicating with a minor for immoral purposes in Yakima County in 2003. The victim was a 13- year-old boy who lives in the neighborhood.
