ZILLAH, Wash. -- Stewart Park may get an expansion as the city tries to buy adjacent property from a homeowner. Located off Cheyne Road behind the Cherry Patch gas station- convenience store, the park is comprised of a large grassy area, horseshoe pits, a volleyball court and cooking shack.
Council Candidates State Their Cases at Forum
Yakima, Wash. -- There were few fireworks at the first candidate forum of the 2009 election season. Those paying attention were rewarded, however, with a zinger or two. Four seats on the Yakima City Council are up for grabs this fall, which is why the League of Women Voters invited all 11 candidates to a "meet-and-greet" Wednesday evening at the downtown library.
City to Revisit Plan to Shrink Summitview Avenue
Acting on citizen complaints, the Yakima City Council has agreed to review the city's plan to restripe a stretch of Summitview Avenue from four lanes to three. "It might be troublesome to all," Mayor Dave Edler said Tuesday, noting that he and other members of the City Council had personally received complaints about the work.
Kittitas Co. Gets Pot Raid Season Off to a Fast Start
YAKIMA, Wash. -- Calling it the largest marijuana crop bust in Kittitas County history, authorities say they discovered close to $10 million worth of plants during an early morning raid Wednesday. About a dozen Kittitas County sheriff's deputies, along with federal and state officers, found 9,514 plants growing in the mountains of the Teanaway area, about 40 miles northwest of Ellensburg, said Undersheriff Clayton Myers.
Power Lost When Vehicle Hits Pole West of Yakima
YAKIMA -- A hit-and-run crash on Summitview Extension left 24 residents without power Wednesday. The power failure was reported about 7 a.m. in the 15300 block of Summitview Extension near Mize Road.
Three Vie for Benton Co. Fire District 3 Commission
Simplifying administrative duties and equipment replacement are points of contention for three candidates vying for a seat on the three-member Benton County Fire District 3 Commission. The district covers roughly 170 square miles of urban, rural and agricultural land in Benton County and the city of Prosser, where its main station is located. With an annual budget of about $600,000, the district's crew is composed of a fire chief, two captains and 25 volunteers.
Kittitas Co. Food Coalition Needs Help
ELLENSBURG, Wash. -- The Food Access Coalition of Kittitas County is looking for volunteers to glean surplus produce from farms, orchards and private gardens. The goal is to distribute more healthful foods to food banks and lessen the amount of food that might ordinarily go to waste.
Motorcyclist Hurt in I-90 Crash
KITTITAS -- A St. Paul, Minn., man was expected to survive multiple injuries after his motorcycle crashed Wednesday afternoon 14 miles east of Kittitas on Interstate 90, the Washington State Patrol reported. Daniel Puziewicz, 34, was eastbound about 4:20 p.m. when his motorcycle had an undetermined mechanical problem, troopers said. The bike rolled, coming to rest in the inside lane.

TIETON, Wash. -- The future of the Cowiche Sewer District board is on many people's minds this election season. Cowiche and Tieton, which have long fought for control of the $4 million plant, resolved their legal battle a year ago.
Woman Given Two Weeks On Work Crew for Welfare Fraud
YAKIMA, Wash. -- A Yakima County Superior Court judge Thursday sentenced a woman to 15 days on a work crew for fraudulently obtaining welfare benefits, a deputy prosecutor said. Leticia Hernandez-Roman, 33, also has to pay back benefits from the state's Department of Social and Health Services, said deputy Prosecutor Quinten Bowman.
