I've had one hunting dog or another in my life for the better part of 40 years. And, while not all of them have been the greatest hunters, they have all been great pets.

The first hunting dog I ever knew was a Brittany spaniel puppy my father bought. I was only 7, but I can still vividly remember the summer evening my dad brought home the wriggling, tiny ball of orange and white fur. He placed the six-week old puppy on the front lawn and I thought it was about the neatest thing in the world. She had the softest fur, and the sweetest smelling breath. I was smitten.
