Summary


Randell Corpuz jogs across the 60 acres that wraps his grandfather's home on the Yakama reservation and heads south for Hembre Mountain.

Clad in sweats, running shoes and a hooded logger jacket, he climbs a cattle gate and cuts though a gaming reserve on his way to the grade that juts more than 1,000 feet above the Lower Valley floor.

Fighting for a Dream

I park my car at the gate and watch him climb as the sun begins to glow behind an eastern ridge.

Although the steepest portion of the grade slows him to nearly a walk, he doesn't stop until he reaches the peak.

Looking through a telephoto camera lens, I can see the Yakama tribal member silhouetted by the morning sky.

The climb symbolizes the 22-year-old amateur boxer's life.
