Generous Gardeners Share Home-Grown Beauty of Their Yard

Summary


Imagine strangers knocking on your door every day or so asking permission to visit your garden. Most of us would be tempted to nail up a sign warning, "PRIVATE PROPERTY -- STAY OUT!" But not Yakima's Jack and Rose Ames. Many years ago, they put up a sign in front of their home that reads, "WELCOME TO OUR GARDEN." Since then, garden- gazers have been coming from the first crocus of spring until the last mum of fall.

Recently Jack took me on a tour of their garden, and afterward we had a long, leisurely visit on the patio with Rose. What a pleasure! It's not often that you have the opportunity to spend an afternoon with two gardeners who have already celebrated 65 years of marriage - - and about the same number of years gardening together. It is mind boggling to think of all the gardening knowledge they have garnered over the years.
