YAKIMA HERALD-REPUBLIC The Davis Pirates were down by five points with two minutes remaining of their Big Nine Conference girls basketball opener Friday night. But they were just getting started - - as the final score of Pirates' 51-47 victory would indicate. The Pirates scored the final nine points of the game, with Christina McDuffie putting Davis on top 49-47 with a pair of free throws with 15 seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, Davis defender Teyia Harvin came up with a steal and passed to Gabby Valencia for the clinching basket in the final seconds. "Our girls never gave up. They played hard," Davis coach Tim Lee said. "We had to wait until the fourth trouble to put a press on -- we didn't want to get in foul trouble or just tire our girls out -- and that (press) hurt them." Davis managed its comeback despite losing Whitney Cass to her fifth foul with 412 minutes remaining, after she had already racked up 12 points and eight rebounds. The Pirates got a big second-half defensive performance from Gabby Valencia, who held Marnie Johnson to two points after the Walla Walla star had scored 15 in the first half.
