It's strange, but when I first heard the news several weeks ago of the former Boise Cascade sawmill shutting down for good, I immediately thought of the river hogs.

Never heard of them? They were the rough riders of the rivers, an unshaven, rough-talking lot, blessed with strong backs and weak minds, some traveling from as far away as Wisconsin and Maine to ply their skills on the Yakima River more than a century ago. Decked out in their signature red-checkered Mackinaw pants and thick woolen shirts, the river hogs never ventured far without their high-laced boots with caulk-studded soles, the kind that could grip wet, slippery logs.
