It was almost a year ago that Yakima County commissioners moved toward setting up a groundwater management area for the Lower Valley. In the wake of a 2008 series of stories in the Yakima Herald- Republic, "Hidden Wells, Dirty Water," commissioners signed a contract with the state Department of Ecology to hire a hydrogeologist, define the boundaries of the area, figure pollution sources and develop enforcement actions against them.
The next step will come at an Aug. 30 hearing conducted by the state Department of Ecology in Sunnyside. The proposed 512-square- mile management area would stretch from Union Gap to Benton City and take in areas east and north of the Yakima River.
