Where there's smoke, there's Wal-Mart. At a recent hearing that brought more yawns than protesters, Wal-Mart suggested making several modifications to its proposed superstore in Yakima's West Valley. One change called for erecting a 439-square-foot gazebo. Under this canopy, employees wearing the Wal-Mart logo would be allowed to puff on their cigarettes. It's outside because state law now forbids smoking in public buildings.

A hearing examiner will decide in the next few days whether this gazebo will be allowed. I doubt seriously he will turn down the request. He can judge only on the specs of the building, not on its merits.
