Rainy Day Fund From Legislature Is Paramount

Summary


Now that the House has done half a job while still calling for record spending in its version of the state budget released last week, it behooves the Senate to inject common sense and fiscal prudence into budget deliberations.

Majority House Democrats are in the driver's seat and have come up with a $29.8 billion spending proposal that has goodies for everyone. It spends way too much of a projected surplus and budget writers have cast aside fiscal responsibility by not including a constitutionally protected "rainy day" fund to stash money as a hedge against future economic downturns.
