Task Force Options Are Good Start to Halting Damage From Jail Fiasco

Summary


Yakima County's jail project is high-centered on bad decisions of the past. So now the overriding question is: Where do we go from here? So far, a list of recommendations from a special task force headed by first-term County Commissioner Mike Leita seems a good start to try to restore some semblance of order out of the chaos.

County commissioners -- including Jesse Palacios and Ron Gamache, who along with former commissioner Jim Lewis must bear the major responsibility and blame for the ill-fated project -- have approved the set of six recommendations that serve as the basis for deciding when (or if) the county should open the 288-bed jail on 20 acres next to the Central Washington State Fairgrounds.
