It's with a sense of sadness that we watch 9,300-year-old bones of Kennewick Man assigned to science. The Yakama, Nez Perce, Umatilla and Colville tribes have decided against appealing a federal court ruling all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.
The four filed a claim to the skeleton shortly after it was found July 31, 1996, near Kennewick. They fought testing and research on the remains, contending that is a moral and cultural desecration of an ancestor, whom they call the Ancient One.
