It's not nearly as contradictory as it sounds as first, the idea that a punk rocker would front a country band as a side project, as MxPx's Mike Herrera is doing with his new band Tumbledown.

Consider Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard. They don't have the piercings, tattoos and other superficial trappings of the punk aesthetic, but their rebel spirit and resistance to commercial pressures have made them heroes to generations of punks. And so we arrive at Tumbledown, which retains the punk ethos of MxPx while sounding more country than the vast bulk of modern country radio.
