YAKIMA, Wash. -- Alan DeAtley, the estranged son of Yakima asphalt paving magnate and philanthropist Al DeAtley, made his first appearance Monday in Yakima County Superior Court stemming from a fraudulent scheme to sell tax credits in Colorado.

The younger DeAtley, 54, is accused of selling more than $1 million in conservation tax credits that did not exist. He and two alleged conspirators were indicted Friday by a Denver grand jury. Of the three, DeAtley faces by far the most charges -- 25 in all, including violating Colorado's Organized Crime Control Act, conspiracy to commit theft, conspiracy to commit forgery, theft, 15 counts of forgery and four counts of tax evasion.
